Of course, it's too early to talk about an Ice Age when the cloud is still nothing more than an innocuous white puff on the horizon, but something's coming and we're guessing it's got something to do with Epic's Winter Royale tournament.
Granted, it didn't take a genius to guess that Epic will be sporting some snowy themes come winter time, what with the company diligently following just about every fad, whether it be or . The company, however, may have just given us an answer in the meantime, announcing Fortnite's Winter Royale tournament.
Epic wrote that the Fall Skirmish is officially over and that the Winter Royale will be kicking off with some "major updates" to Fortnite's tournament system. The company claims to have addressed all the critical issues that prevented the game from "accomplishing [Epic's] goals for a competitive environment."
Fortnite's brought about many "critical fixes to in-game tournament matchmaking", where point totals will play a role in matchmaking, i.e. players will be matched by point totals. Moreover, the tweaks will ensure that the Winter Royale competition gets progressively more difficult the further you go.
As for the final cherry on top, Epic will be doing a test drive of their World Cup Qualification process later this month, throwing in a participation incentive of $1 million to players kind enough to assist them. Fortnite's solo test events will come in two parts - the Winter Royale Qualifiers and the Winter Royale Finals, although we reckon that the larger chunk of the $1 million is reserved for the Finals.
If you're interested in taking part in the Winter Royale tournament, Epic provided the dates as follows:
- Winter Royale Qualifier (Open): 11/24/2018 - 11/25/2018
- Europe Winter Royale Finals: 11/30/2018 - 12/1/2018
- North America Winter Royale Finals: 12/11/2018 - 12/12/2018

Epic were also pretty clever to ensure that Fortnite has physical copies on store shelves come Christmas and it's working. In fact, Fortnite: Deep Freeze bundle ended up outselling in UK's retail channels, which is quite the feat for a game that's normally free.
