CD Projekt co-founder Michał Kiciński has acquired 100% ownership of GOG, reaffirming its DRM-free mission and confirming continued support for CD Projekt Red games.

CD Projekt co-founder Michał Kiciński has officially taken full ownership of the DRM-free digital games storefront GOG. While GOG has always been closely affiliated with CD Projekt, this marks the first time since its creation that the company is 100 percent under Kiciński’s control.

Kiciński and CD Projekt have both reaffirmed that GOG will continue operating separately, with a dedication to its historic game preservation model and focus on consumer ownership.

GOG still plans to operate independently

The storefront was founded in 2008 by Michał Kiciński and has since remained part of the broader CD Projekt umbrella for years. The recent acquisition moves 100 percent of GOG’s ownership to Kiciński personally, rather than through the CD Projekt entity.

In a press statement after the announcement, GOG reiterated its mission statement: Make Games Live Forever. Kiciński also restated that pledge, noting that both CD Projekt and GOG share the same core values, including independence, freedom of choice, and true ownership of purchased titles.

He also noted that titles from CD Projekt Red, such as the Witcher and Cyberpunk franchises, will remain a big part of the store and that it will be a “home of choice” for all of their future releases.

Focus on classics and DRM-free philosophy

Kiciński made it clear that he will be emphasising his own love of classic games, pointing out that these well-made older titles are often just as enjoyable to play as contemporary ones, and, as the market can be saturated with new releases, more timeless design tends to have a better track record of pleasing players.

GOG will also continue to prioritise its key values of DRM-free distribution of:

  • Classic PC games
  • Modern games with a retro aesthetic
  • Freedom for players to truly own their purchased games

Kiciński added that he is working on multiple retro-styled games at present that he hopes to bring to GOG in 2026.

CD Projekt’s future relationship with GOG

Michał Nowakowski, CD Projekt’s joint CEO, stated that this new direction was a natural evolution of the company’s plans, allowing CD Projekt to pour more energy into its core franchises, while entrusting GOG to capable leadership. As part of the deal, GOG will be signing a distribution agreement that will bring all future CD Projekt Red titles to its platform.
