Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) kicked off the start of next-gen Call of Duty titles. Moreover, it also introduced Call of Duty: Warzone as a permanent complimentary mode for all Call of Duty titles.
While Call of Duty received its biggest technical and visual update, the game file sizes became ginormous on platforms. The massive game file size led to major updates becoming a burden for the majority of the game's player base.
To everyone's surprise, 6 years since the start of next-gen Call of Duty titles, the game file sizes are finally getting a massive reduction on PlayStation consoles with the upcoming update.
Call of Duty's Game File Size gets Downsized
According to the PlayStation Game Size account on X, the next Call of Duty update will bring about a reduction of game file size on PlayStation consoles. The game file size will go from 126 GB to 25 GB on the PlayStation 5, and it will go from 81 GB to 62 GB on the PlayStation 4.
The game file size reduction on PlayStation 5 might be the result of Activision getting limited by Sony's Kraken file compression tech. The Kraken compression tech reduces the game files on PlayStation 5 consoles by 60% to compensate for the compact storage system.
While the game file size reduction will affect the base game files, with the other downloadable content, the size may add up to become a little more. Currently, the game file size for Call of Duty: Warzone 2 and Black Ops 6 combines to a hefty 216 GB, which will go down below 150 GB once the update goes live.
The next upcoming update is Call of Duty going live on September 4, kicking off Season 5 Reloaded. Alongside the game file size reduction, players can also manage the game files of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies on console, allowing them to further manage the game size on PlayStation consoles.
