Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War fans have mostly had to rely on info that, ahem, fell off a truck, but today's alpha launch on PS4 means we get to see what it's all about.

"Just under two months before the release of the direct sequel to the original Call of Duty: Black Ops, and mere weeks ahead of the game’s Beta, all PlayStation 4 owners will be able to participate in the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Alpha", the studio(s) wrote.

Preloads have alrady started, with the official Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Alpha kickoff set for today, September 18, 2020, at 10am PT / 7pm CEST. It ends at the same time on September 20, 2020.

Note that German players must have PS Plus, whereas the rest of the countries are exempt from this, i.e. no PS Plus subscription needed. The download weighs in at 25 GB and should play nicely with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or Warzone - you can install from either of the two's menus and seamlessly cross over.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War's Alpha features three modes and three maps tailored for 6v6 carnage. We're talking about Team Deathmatch, Kill Confirmed and Domination, the latter boasting a larger capture area than earlier CoD titles, while the maps are Miami, Moscow and Satellite.

Treyarch and Raven also threw in Combined Arms: Domination, a new 12v12 vehicle-friendly edition of the traditional Domination, with much larger maps to accomodate for the higher player count.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War's new mode takes place on two maps, Armada and Crossroads, so get ready to take your tanks, snowmobiles, wakerunners and gunboats out for a ride.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War servers won't be live for another hour or so, but SNKR captured the alpha lobby screens and they look pretty sleek. You can check them out in the video below.
