Blizzard had already announced loot boxes were going away with Overwatch 2 but the currently active game is ditching the paid ones much sooner.

Blizzard has kicked off Anniversary Remix Vol 3 event in Overwatch and it will last until August 30, 2022. With the event happening, the team has unvaulted a few cosmetics that were available only during certain periods in the game, allowing players to use up their credits before Overwatch 2.

The credits will not become useless with the new game but there will be a new virtual currency for certain purchases. Loot boxes, on the other hand, will be completely removed.

Furthermore, paid loot boxes will be removed once the ongoing event ends, which is more than a month before Overwatch 2's early access launch, which is scheduled for October 4, 2022.

In the meantime, players will still be able to obtain loot boxes through gameplay and let's be fair - most of us got them that way exclusively so far. Unfortunately, they will be removed entirely with OW2.

If someone asked me whether I would ever lament the removal of loot boxes, the answer would be a certain no in most cases but Overwatch did have a rather fair system that didn't require players to obtain loot at a snail's pace in order to push them towards spending money.

Overwatch 2 will embrace the season pass system which is almost guaranteed to cost more for the average player and the recent pricing survey controversy has an ominous tone about the price of full enjoyment in the "sequel".
