James "Smoke" Porter has been introduced as one of the original 20 operators of Rainbow Six Siege. He is a two-speed, two-armour defender representing the British SAS alongised Mute, Thatcher and Sledge.
While he was not a star student in school, he was very fond of the sciences. He followed a more untraditional way of educating himself with tutors, home-schooling, and field science. He prefers to acquire knowledge and skills, such as language and music, in his own way and does not excel in a formal training capacity.
Porter is consistently described as detached. He isn't detached but rather focused, he is training his mind to stay on task and filter out dangerous distractions.
He strives to keep emotions away from decision-making, opting for outlets such as live music events to deplete the tension, thus enabling him to be the person he needs to be on the job.
It’s clear that Smoke’s parents allowed him to be a free spirit and educate and develop himself on his own terms even if it didn't always go according to plan – one science experiment left some scars on his face that were shown 7 years after he was introduced.
Descriptions such as thrill-seeker and fearless were often attached to Smoke but there’s more nuance to him than that. He’s measured and understands calculated risks.
He enjoys acquiring new skills and once he’s mastered them, he moves on to the next one. This is not the case with his adopted daughter who he does not really show to his colleagues.
Smoke has made sure that she has found her spot in the system he himself was unable to fit into. and with her, he grabs every new day as the challenge he loves to tackle.
