The bosses in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, the newest Souls-like action RPG from 505 Games, can be very formidable, especially if you're not familiar with the game's mechanics yet.
At the beginning of the game, there'll be a couple of bosses that will test your patience and fighting skills, but once you meet Commander Honglan, the final boss of the major location called Warship's Rise, you'll figure out that all of them were just small cats in comparison to this formidable lion of a boss.
Seriously, this boss is so hard; it took me more than 50 tries to figure out the strategy to beat her. If you're having the same difficulties, fear not; this video guide will help you deal with her with not so much trouble.
How to beat Commander Honglan in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers
First of all, you should heed the warning the game gives you before the fight starts, and that's to try using the Sword Counter ability. If you don't know how to activate this ability, check out the link above.
Commander Honglan is a difficult boss due to her aggressiveness; once you reach the second phase of the fight, she will constantly attack, giving you almost zero opportunity to punish her—seriously, she is so aggressive, I cannot remember a single boss I fought in any video game that gives you so little time to respond during the fight.
The First Phase
Commander Honglan has one health bar, but once you deplete half of it, she will transform the phases and become super aggressive. During the first phase, the best strategy, and probably the only possible one, is to parry her thrust attacks. Every time she attacks you this way, learn the parry timing and punish her with the counterattack, and then double-step back to prevent her from doing the other more dangerous attacks.
Every time you parry her and punish her with a couple of hits, she will pull one of the three follow-up attacks: dagger throw, foot stamp, or the most dangerous one, a combo you'll have to learn to dodge. The first two can be easily dodged, earning you one Skyborn Might point, which will be of crucial importance during the second phase.
If you're lucky enough, you'll be able to stagger the boss once during this phase, which will allow you to land some free hits.
The second phase
The second phase is where things become very real. The boss will attack relentlessly, and parrying won't help you here, because she will employ the magic attacks, which, unfortunately, cannot be parried.
Here, you'll have to shimmer (dodge) backwards all the time and wait for the opportunity to launch the magic attack of your own. I recommend using the Echo of Lu Bingzhang because this attack is fast, and activating it will launch you in the air, usually avoiding some of the boss's dangerous attacks in the process.
Every shimmer will grant you one Skyborn Might, and once you stack three, you'll be able to cast a spell. This method is pretty tedious, but it is effective, and after so many deaths, I can confirm that it is perhaps the only one legitimate enough to go through this second phase.
I cannot stress enough that you refrain from trying to attack the boss during the second phase; if she manages to catch you inside one of her dangerous combos, you won't stand a chance of survival. Keep your distance, shimmer to the back and during the water attacks to the side, and once you gain enough Skyborn Might, punish. Rinse and repeat, and that's it.
