Combat in Mortal Shell 2 revolves around a handful of interlocking systems, including the Shells you possess, the Weapons and Sidearms you wield, the Seals you equip, and the Tarstones that support them. Sidearms serve as your secondary weapon in a fight, used alongside your main weapon for anything from ranged pokes to status ailments, and some bring crowd control options that your main weapon simply can't match. The Troubadour's Lute is one of the better examples of this, and it doesn't require a dungeon or a side quest to obtain. It's a good pick for players who find large enemy encounters tedious, since it effectively turns a group fight into enemies doing most of the work for you while you replenish what you need to keep them at it.
Step 1: Head to the One Legged Wolf Tavern
The Lute can be found in the same tavern connected to Gragu's questline, located in eastern Fainweald right next to the One Legged Wolf beacon. Fast travel to the beacon and head inside the tavern.
Once inside, look toward the small stage area where a man is performing for the tavern's patrons, since the Lute is sitting just behind him and is easy to miss if you're not paying attention.
Step 2: Pick up the Lute
Walk up to the Lute and interact with it to add it to your inventory, with no dialogue or prompts involved as it's simply there for the taking. The Lute is a special sidearm that inflicts Confusion when used in combat, and can be applied to multiple enemies at once, causing them to turn on each other instead of Harbinger. If there's nothing nearby for a confused enemy to attack, it instead suffers severe Break Damage, leaving it vulnerable to a Riposte.
You can hold up to five casts of the Lute at once, with each cast applying five seconds of Confusion. Against a group, chaining all five casts can give you up to a 25 second window of enemies fighting amongst themselves. Since casting the Lute costs Resolve, this window also doubles as your chance to land free hits with your main weapon and build that Resolve back up, letting you keep the cycle going rather than running dry after a single use.
Quick tip: Save the Lute for areas with multiple enemies rather than one-on-one fights, since its value comes from turning a group against itself. Don't just wait out the Confusion window either, get some hits in while they're distracted to keep your Resolve topped up.
DON'T MISS!
