Baldur's Gate 3: Strange Ox explained
Baldur's Gate 3 - Strange Ox has a deceptively important role
Baldur's Gate 3 - Strange Ox has a deceptively important role

Strange Ox may seem like a minor distraction in Baldur's Gate 3 but it can completely derail a major quest.

Speak With Animals makes Baldur's Gate 3 a much richer experience and choosing to use this effect in the first Act of the game is crucial to some quests and developments that will span through the rest of the game.

Strange Ox belongs in this group.

You will encounter it for the first time in the Emerald Grove next to a Bored Ox and a Hungry Ox.

Upon noticing something is off, you will be able to interact with the Strange Ox and if you have the aforementioned effect, it will start behaving suspiciously.

When you exhaust dialogue with it, there will only be a generic line where it mimics a cow "moo" and you will not be able to have more dialogue. While this may justify violence for some, it is not recommended to attack it just yet. If you do, Dammon will not appear in Act 2 and you will not be able to use him for Flawed Helldusk armour crafting or Karlach's personal quest.

Baldur's Gate 3 - Dammon works wonders with the Infernal Iron
Baldur's Gate 3 - Dammon is quite important through all Acts

That said, when you reach the Last Light Inn during Act 2, you will find the Strange Ox once again in the stables, close to Dammon's forge. At this point, it will claim that you are "not capable". If you press the matter and insist it shows you what you are no capable of, the ox will show you visions of mutilated humanoid corpses which looks quite disturbing.

With that knowledge under your belt, you can press it further to reveal its true form. If you pass a Persuasion, Perception or Nature check, the ox will reveal itself ot be an ooze and will become hostile immediately.

Keep in mind that this is all happening in close proximity to Dammon who doesn't have much health. Therefore, you should take care to protect him as much as possible because if he dies, Karlach's quest will broke and you will lose an important trader for Acts 2 and 3.

When you defeat the "ox", Dammon will be grateful but not much will change in general. You can loot Shapeshifter's Boon ring from the ooze which is perfect for druids who want to succeed at more checks.
