One surprise attack can have dire consequences in Baldur's Gate 3 and preventing it can prove quite difficult. Here is a few tips on how to thwart that plot.

There are several main objectives in Act 2 of Baldur's Gate 3 - getting protection from the shadow curse, stopping Ketheric Thorm and if possible, lift the curse altogether.

One of the central characters is Isobel, a cleric of Selune, who will give you some pretty good protection against the curse but will be attacked immediately after by a traitor from Flaming Fist.

He will bring along a few of his winged buddies and attempt to kidnap Isobel, the only hope the Last Light Inn has.

How to prevent Isobel's kidnapping in Baldur's Gate 3

The kidnapping will only succeed if the enemies manage to bring Isobel's health down to zero. Unfortunately, they will also target her almost exclusively so you need to prevent them from attacking her and thin the herd before they get her.

Turn Undead

AoE crowd-control is the way to go here and Turn Undead is easily the best spell you can have in your arsenal. It doesn't work on Marcus but it works on every other enemy in the room and if they fail their saving throws, they will not be able to attack Isobel for several turns. Additionally, Isobel has this spell in her arsenal but fails to use it if her health has been diminished as she will prioritise healing instead. If you manage to keep her topped off during the first turn, she will cast it and almost certainly win the battle for you right there.

Illithid powers

Speaking of keeping Isobel topped off, you can do so easily with Shield of Thralls Ilithid power. It will give her a little extra health but that part is not the star of the show - the stun is. Since the enemies will prioritise Isobel with attacks, they will easily break through the shield you gave her and that will activate the power's AoE stun, which can also affect Marcus. Position your team carefully so they don't get hit by the blast as well.

The second Illithid power that will help you greatly is Perilous Stakes. You need this ability to succeed on Marcus, at which point his big health pool doesn't matter anymore since you will keep doing double damage with every attack and spell on him.

Be careful even after killing Marcus

The winged traitor will be the one that kidnaps Isobel if he is alive when she gets to zero HP but even if he dies before that, one of the winged ghouls can kidnap her still. In other words, Marcus is the biggest threat in the room but after you kill him, make sure the ghouls don't finish off Isobel.

What happens if Isobel is kidnapped

You never really want this outcome. Karlach and Halsin's personal quests will get interrupted, Halsin will leave your party and the curse will not be lifted.
