NetEase have posted results for the first quarter of 2019 and the company's launch of Minecraft in China is turning into a proper success story, as the game's headcount increased to 200 million players, a worthy achievement indeed.
Mojang have every reason to be ecstatic with the news as well, because according to the latest data, Minecraft's western edition had a playerbase of 90 million.
This means that NetEase's Minecraft has easily doubled Minecraft's popularity outside of China in less than two years since it launched, but to be fair - early signs strongly suggested this will be the case, and then some.
NetEase said that the 200 million milestone was reached well before the first quarter of 2019 ended, so the actual number is even higher.
The total number of Minecraft players in China actually exceeded the total number of copies sold outside of the country, which was somewhere at 150 million in 2018.
Of course, it's worth noting that NetEase's Minecraft is a free-to-play game, whose PC, iOS and Android versions launched in August, September and October 2017, respectively.
By the end of October, NetEase's Minecraft sped by 30 million downloads and its first four months raked in $1 million in revenue, so it's not like its success wasn't expected.
NetEase's finances are doing well too, and the company reported a 35 per cent increase in online games revenue compared to Q1 2018, with mobile games accounting for as much as 72 per cent of their total revenue.
The success was largely attributed to the likes of Minecraft as well as other popular NetEase titles like Identity V and Knives Out, to name but a few, with notable success on the Japanese market.
You may recall Knives Out from the PUBG Corp and NetEase's legal tussle over whether it infringed on PUBG's copyrighted material, although the dev systematically weeded out most traces of influences.
NetEase said in a statement they're particularly delighted with the fact they're not only known for MMORPG titles and that the appeal of their brand has grown both in China and abroad.
