According to Superdata's February 2019 global revenue report, Apex Legends has the best launch month of all free to play games in history. Respawn's battle royale generated an estimated $92 million from in-game spending across all platforms
Respawn's battle royale Apex Legends has broken many records ever since its release back in February 2019. The game quickly attracted a high number of players despite its guerilla launch. In its first month, Apex Legends had more than 50 million players on all platforms with more than 2 million concurrent players.
You may wonder what does this mean for revenue numbers as Apex Legends is free to play game with some in-game cosmetics and loot boxes. Well, according to Superdata's February 2019 global revenue report, Apex Legends has generated an estimated $92 million from in-game spending across all platforms. However, the majority of purchases are from PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
These numbers mean that Apex Legends has the best launch month of any free-to-play title in the history of gaming. Despite this, Epic's battle royale king Fortnite still came in above Apex Legends in the top grossing rankings.
When compared to Anthem, Apex Legends' generated revenue looks even more impressive. Superdata report lists Anthem just above Apex Legends on consoles with over $100 million in digital revenue at launch.
Anthem was also the top-selling title by units on consoles in February 2019, with an above-average digital download rate. In-game spending came in at $3.5 million across both platforms.
As for other titles that are mentioned in the report, numbers for Blizzard's Hearthstone don't look good. The card game had its largest year-over-year decline ever this month, dropping 52 per cent across PC and mobile, partly due to heightened competition within the genre and likely franchise fatigue.
NBA2K19 in-game spending is up an estimated 42 per cent when compared to NBA2K18, which shows some of the highest growth seen from any mature AAA franchise in recent years.
The list also includes the usual suspects such as FIFA 19, Call of Duty Black Ops 4, GTA V on consoles and League of Legends, Dota 2 and World of Tanks on PC.
