In a recent Reddit AMA, John Larson, Respawn's associate live balance designer, said that Caustic is probably too strong at the moment, and that they'll look to adjust him a bit.
Larson conceded Caustic has been a bit overpowered as of late, chalking it off to players getting used to most recent changes.
"I think ever since the change to gas allowed teammates to play in gas with relatively no repercussions, there was a lot of unrealised potential that was quickly tapped into within the past couple months", he said.
Most Apex Legends players are well aware that Caustics can be incredibly tough nuts to crack, especially when paired with a good team, and the in-game numbers agree. Nevertheless, Respawn won't be diving in willy-nilly, sticking instead to more gradual methods.
"Caustic is undeniably strong and has the highest win rate in matches that last longer than 20 minutes. Caustic plays a unique role as a defensive legend that can act offensively in certain scenarios, and we have to make sure we tweak him in a way that removes frustration without hurting how it feels to play as Caustic", he wrote.
It makes perfect sense to exercise caution while tweaking Apex Legends' crazy chemist, because being good at the role he's been created for is not that alarming. Unlike, for instance, the nerfing of Pathfinder's, whose skillset made him good in pretty much every role you'd think of, and that often included outrunning Octane.
In conclusion, Larson said that the feedback has been taken onboard, saying, "As a player, I feel it's valid, the data backs up that he's strong, and he'll be getting some attention in the near future."
