InXile Entertainment have today announced that the newly formed studio Shapeshifter Games are now helping them with the development of the upcoming Xbox exclusive Clockwork Revolution. Shapeshifter Games was formed shortly after the closure of Volition studio, known for the recent Saints Row reboot, Red Faction and Agents of Mayhem series among other things.
"We’re happy to announce that the newly formed Shapeshifter Games—formed of ex-Volition developers—is working with us to help bring Clockwork Revolution to life," it's written in the announcement on InXile's website.
InXile reveal that they visited the ex-Volition team shortly after the studio closed down in August 2023 to talk about a potential partnership that would see Shapeshifter Games co-develop Clockwork Revolution, InXile's upcoming first-person steampunk RPG.
Both InXile head Brian Fargo and President Chris Keenan revealed how ecstatic they are to secure this new studio as they have quite the history with Volition's games - Fargo helped the team publish their classics at Interplay while Keenan tested Descent back in the 90s.
InXile also said that co-development partnerships like these can be challenging at times but they knew from the start that teaming up with Shapeshifter Games was the right thing to do. InXile have already found a "place to land" on Clockwork Revolution for their new partners, so it's safe to assume that the development is now moving forward full steam ahead.
Shapeshifter Games boss Matt Madigan added that they have truly hit the ground running on Clockwork Revolution and are grateful to InXile and Microsoft for giving them the opportunity to assist on this brand-new Xbox IP.
InXile have been working on Clockwork Revolution for many years. The studio finally showed the first trailer for their title at the Xbox Showcase last year, causing a bit of controversy due to similarities with the Bioshock Infinite reveal trailer.
Clockwork Revolution is set in a steampunk metropolis and from what we know so far, it features unique time-bending mechanics, allowing players to change the past, alert the future and more depending on their choices.
The game does not have a release date just yet but if we had to guess, we would say it's coming sometime in 2025 to PC, Xbox Series X|S and Game Pass.
