In case you're unaware, Fallout creator Tim Cain has a very unique YouTube channel where he shares his thoughts on various game development techniques but also talks about his favourite games from time to time.
In his latest video, which you can watch below, Tim talked about the top five modern "masterclass" RPGs, which is a follow-up to his earliest video where Tim talked about his favourite games of all time.
For his new video, Tim explained that he doesn't necessarily think these are the best games ever but those who want to make RPG games, should pay attention to them, as they do RPG mechanics better than other titles.
If you love RPGs we wholeheartedly recommend that you check out the video as Tim explains in detail why he picked these games below but in case you don't have the time to watch it, here's TL;DW.
Tim Cain's top five masterclass RPGs
According to Cain, World of Warcraft proved that if you make games easier, they will be more fun. Cain says that the popular WoW was not the first MMO and perhaps not even the best MMO but it struck a great balance between fun and easy.
4. Elden Ring
In a surprising twist, Cain's second game on the list is one of the hardest RPGs ever - Elden Ring. So why did Cain pick this challenging From Software title if he thinks easy=fun? Well, the legendary creator argues that even though Elden Ring is tough, it executed perfectly on its make-it-hard design pillar. "Elden Ring is a perfect example of an RPG where harder makes it more fun," he said.
3. Skyrim
"Skyrim is an absolute masterclass in exploration," Cain says about Skyrim and adds how he loved the art variety and level design. He also revealed that Skyrim is the closest he ever come to playing Dungeons and Dragons on the computer.
2. Fallout New Vegas
In Tim's opinion, Fallout New Vegas is a perfect example on how you take a classic older game and bring it to a new era. Cain revealed three things that New Vegas did exceptionally well: it extended the storyline of the first two games into the modern era, it nailed the humour and had great world reactivity.
To no one's surprise, Cain picks Baldur's Gate 3 in his top spot. He reveals that he loved how the game absolutely proved industry "know-it-alls" wrong. According to Tim, Baldur's Gate 3 is the perfect example that turn-based is not boring and that Dungeons and Dragons, RPGs and PC gaming are nowhere near dead.
Tim added Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines, Half-Life 2 and Vampire Survivors as three other notable mentions with great game design that developers can learn from.
