Grand Theft Auto 6 is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles first

Key Points from the Article

  • GTA 5 is not releasing on PC day one due to Rockstar's love for the double release schedule, which creates more buzz than a single simultaneous release.
  • The PC version would add a couple of extra years to the development, pushing the GTA 6 release date closer to 2030.
  • PC is the most complex platform for development, requiring optimization for various hardware, unlike consoles, which have one set of hardware and tools.

Rockstar officially announced Grand theft Auto 6 only for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, skipping the day-one release on PC. Here is why the publisher

We already know that Grand Theft Auto 6 won't be launching on PC on the same day it arrives on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 but what many PC players don't seem to understand is why is Rockstar once again skipping their preferred platform.

While it may look like Rockstar simply don't appreciate the platform as much as they do the consoles, that's certainly not the case. Rockstar, as any other publisher would love to have their game out on as many platforms as possible, but sometimes, that's easier said than done.

In this article, we'll try to give you an answer on why are Rockstar's games always skipping day-one launch on PC. You may not like what you read, but it's probably the most realistic answer anyone can give you.

Why is GTA 5 not releasing on PC day one?

The answer to this question is actually quite simple. First, Rockstar love the double release schedule which obviously creates more buzz than a single simultaneous release.

Just as the hype starts to dry out, the publisher can launch the better, improved version of the game on PC with new features and content, creating another wave of excitement among players. This has been the case with pretty much every Rockstar game and will be the case with GTA 6.

Rockstar's titles usually skip PC releases and GTA 6 is no different

Another big reason why GTA 6 and other Rockstar games never launch simultaneously across all platforms is the scope and ambition of the projects. It will take Rockstar close to ten years to finish GTA 6 for consoles, which is a monumental effort from the team.

The PC version would certainly add a couple of extra years to the development, pushing GTA 6 release date closer to 2030. This is simply due to PC being the most complex platform for development as it requires optimisation for various hardware including hundreds of GPUs and CPUs, unlike consoles, which have one set of hardware and tools.

That's probably the two main reasons why GTA 6 is not launching simultaneously on PC and consoles. We doubt Rockstar will ever change their release schedule, which is unfortunate for PC players who have supported Rockstar by purchasing their games over the many years.
