Wasteland and Wasteland 2 fans may not be happy about streamlining that takes place in weapon and other skill systems with Wasteland 3. On the other hand, we have only seen a small section of gameplay and it might be too early to judge.

Wasteland 3 will apparently have fewer skill trees as some have been incorporated into others or even into attributes. For example, Perception is no longer a skill of its own anymore and it's demoted to being one of the bonuses that come with Awareness attribute.

Another major change is that the Coordination attribute increases constitution now which may look than optimal for melee characters but it's merely a tool that lets players make proper long-range team members without having to be glass cannons. Strength still gives bonus constitution as well.

Melee characters will probably be happy with additional armour penetration they will have as a result of Speed now awarding the bonus.

Furthermore, if someone wishes better critical hit chance, they will no longer need to invest into the dump stat that was Luck in Wasteland 2.

On the flip side, we have the absolute watering down of weapon skills now. No weapon has a devoted tree of its own now. Shotguns and handguns are now governed by Small Arms skill while SMGs, assault rifles and energy weapons are all Automatic Weapons.

Brawling, blunt and bladed weapons will fall under the Melee Weapons tree which will most likely result in people just picking the most effective weapons since their chosen skill trees will no longer restrict them. Big Guns governs heavy machine guns and rocket launchers.

On the flip side, the Melee Weapons skill, in particular, could offer some versatility Wasteland 2 didn't have. For example, Rangers will be able to use a blunt weapon for armoured enemies or quickly switch to a bladed or brawling one for when critical hits are needed.

It's too early to draw conclusions but we are sure there will be some fans who will wish they had the unpredictable skill tree choices like before, that were utterly confusing for first-timers.
