Days Gone is not getting a sequel, says Jeff Ross, since Sony never really liked the first game

Key Points from the Article

  • According to former Bend Studio developer Jeff Ross, one of the reasons we're never getting Days Gone 2 is because Sony higher-ups, like Hermen Hulst, were not fans of the first game.
  • Hulst's dislike for the game was purely portfolio-based, as Sony already had a highly popular zombie game in The Last of Us.
Days Gone is not getting a sequel, says Jeff Ross, since Sony never really liked the first game

Days Gone Game Director Jeff Ross revealed on social media X that PlayStation bosses didn't really like the game which is one of the reasons why the sequel will probably never happen.

Bend Studios' zombie survival action-adventure Days Gone has become somewhat of a cult classic despite scoring only 71 out of 100 on Metacritic when it launched. Since then, the game managed to sell close to 10 million copies across all platforms according to Game Director Jeff Ross but that wasn't enough to warrant a sequel.

Speaking about the sequel, Ross has shared more interesting details on why we never got one. In his most recent post on social media X, former Bend Studio developer revealed that one of the reasons Days Gone 2 won't happen is because Sony higher ups like Hermen Hulst were never really fans of the first game.

"Sony higher ups like Hermen were never fans, so you won't hear about [Days Gone 2] at the PlayStation State of Play today or ever," Ross said.

He elaborated that Hulst's dislike for Bend's open-world title was purely portfolio-based, meaning that the publisher already had a mega-popular zombie game in The Last of Us and adding another franchise with similar concept wouldn't make much sense.

"I think his bias was purely portfolio-based. Meaning they already had a zombie game, so why would they need the lesser-performing title."

When asked about the project Bend Studio are working on at the moment, Ross replied that whatever the game is, the studio already spent at least $250 million on development. He added that such a sum is crazy since Sony refused to fund Days Gone 2 which would only require a budget of 150 million.

"Whatever it is [Bend's next game], they've spent at least a quarter of a billion dollars on it. I'm no businessman, but that's crazy given the fact Sony didn't want to fund a DG sequel for the bargain basement price of a hundred fifty million (insane numbers all around, tbh)."

Days Gone 2 would only cost 150 million according to Jeff Ross but Sony still didn't want to greenlit the sequel

Personally, I had some solid fun with Days Gone when it launched. It's true that the game didn't have the production values and polish of Santa Monica Studio's or Naughty Dog's titles but for Bend's first game under Sony, it was pretty great.

It's certainly a shame that this one won't become a franchise as Bend Studio probably had big ideas for the sequel. However, If there's even a slim chance that Bend's next game is some sort of a Syphon Filter reboot, then I'm wiling to forget all about Days Gone 2.
