Sony's new hero shooter Concord is facing an unimaginable nightmare following the game's negative reception on PlayStation 5 and PC. The game is one of the most expensive projects from Sony, costing the studio almost $100 million in development.
After its launch in August 23 alongside the blockbuster title Black Myth: Wukong, the hero shooter from Firewalk Studios is facing a miserable fate. The game is struggling to find a dedicated audience, with extremely low number of sales on all platforms including PC and PlayStation.
Following this struggle, the game is facing a flood of negative reviews on different user review platforms. The negative reviews are plaguing the game's existing reputation after Sony's decision to put all their focus on controversial game design and culture.
Sony's Concord is getting Negative Review-bombed
Sony's nightmare began with the launch of Concord on August 23, 2024. The game reached the lowest player count on Steam at the day of the launch, which decreased to around 300 players by now. To add more fuel to the fire, Concord has started to get review-bombed by players on various review platforms.
The game's review on Metacritic doesn't look good either. The game has a user score of 2.1, with players sharing their frustration at Sony's decision to make the game design choices no one wanted.
The review from an user on Metacritic stating, "Congratulations to Sony for giving us a compilation of everything not to do when creating a video game," properly summarises how players want simple game design choices from the developers and publishers.
As of writing, Concord is the lowest-rated game in Metacritic's history. The major player backlash comes from Sony leaning on so-called left-wing ideologies and DEI aspects. Most players reviewing the game haven't actually played the game as on the flip side, the game's review seems to be mostly positive on Steam.
However, the game has managed to garner all sorts of negative attention since its initial reveal, leading to reduced player attention and game sales. Many analysts have pointed out that Concord's failure on launch and negative player perception will cost Sony a loss of almost $200 million.
The only way Sony could salvage the game's reception is by lifting the PSN restriction in more than 170 countries and going free-to-play which will allow players to check out the game without paying a $40 price tag. Most of the hero shooters out there are free-to-play which allows to them maintain a healthy player base. But it's safe to say, Sony has to pull off a miracle to make Concord standout against its competitors like the upcoming title from Microsoft, FragPunk.
