Phil Spencer has formally retired from Microsoft after spending more than 30 years with the company, ending his tenure as CEO of Microsoft Gaming and longtime ambassador for Xbox.
Responsibilities for the division will soon shift to new leader Asha Sharma. Sarah Bond will also be departing Microsoft. The news comes as a surprise to many following the timing - Microsoft’s Xbox celebrated its 25th anniversary this year and has big launches scheduled.
Reports are surfacing today that Spencer’s exit was not years in the making.
Insider Claims Departure “Was Not Planned”
Asked about this report later on Thursday, Greg Miller of Kinda Funny said someone had "passed something along" to him about the situation. "This was not done with advanced planning if you guys believe us," Miller quoted whoever he spoke with as saying.
"This came quicker than we expected." If true, this remark leaves us wondering why both Spencer and Bond decided to step down now, instead of during a major Xbox event or at the close of a fiscal year.
Studio Plans and 2026 Lineup Unaffected
In other news about Microsoft's recent shuffle, Chief Content Officer Matt Booty noted that the company's in-house studios will not be affected by any of the executive level changes.
Projects Xbox fans can look forward to include:
- Forza Horizon 6
- Fable
- Halo: Campaign Evolved
- Gears of War: E-Day
Right now, it's still unclear what exactly happened with Spencer's exit. If Microsoft doesn't provide additional details, rumors surrounding the abrupt change will continue to fly.
