Improvements to the Honor system and player behavior initiatives could create a more supportive environment that might make voice chat a viable addition. Riot is considering how voice chat could enhance teamwork and strategy in future seasons.

In a recent Twitch stream, Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill shared some thoughts on the potential addition of voice chat to League of Legends. Though communication is key in any team-based game, League has long avoided including the feature for fear of player toxicity.

Currently, League of Legends has a few different ways for players to communicate during a match. Text chat allows you to send long messages, but it's slower during fast-paced moments. Pings are quick and universal, but generally vague and easily misunderstood. Emotes are primarily used for light-hearted interactions rather than strategy.

While these work for a fair amount of communication, many players feel they are lacking, especially when it comes to highly competitive gameplay that requires clarity and speed. For years now, players have been demanding a voice chat system that would fill in the gap.

The Challenges of adding voice chat

The primary reason Riot has kept its distance from implementing voice chat so far is because of toxic behavior often observed in the League community.

Other competitive games, like Valorant, integrate voice chat into the game by default, while League has struggled to maintain a positive environment among players.

Currently, the game does have a voice chat system, but it's extremely limited to pre-made groups only. Most of the players do not prefer that and stick to third-party applications, such as Discord, as they are much better regarding both functionality and convenience.

In the recent stream, Marc Merrill acknowledged the debate, saying Riot's now reviewing the possibility of adding voice chat to League.

Merrill said that upcoming improvements to the Honor system and player behavior initiatives could create a more supportive environment that might make voice chat a viable addition.

While no concrete plans have been announced, this shift in perspective means Riot is seriously considering how voice chat could enhance teamwork and strategy in future seasons. For now, players will have to stay tuned.
