Epic Games continue their trend of buying timed exclusives and Snapshot Games are the most recent ones in line to accept the deal. Phoenix Point, the spiritual successor of XCOM, will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store for one year.

Julian Gollop, the creator of XCOM and CEO of Snapshot Games has posted a video announcing the Epic Games Store exclusivity deal for the upcoming turn-based tactics game, Phoenix Point. Needless to say, this move earned the ire of fans, many of whom were backers of the game, evidenced by the storm of negative comments and like to dislike ratio on the aforementioned video, embedded above.

Not everything is entirely bad though as the backers who already purchased Phoenix Point will get one year of free DLC, although Gollop didn't specify what this content will be. It could turn out to be a full-fledged expansion like XCOM: Enemy Within or XCOM 2: War of the Chosen. On the other hand, it could turn out to be a few cosmetic packs. Time will tell.

Those who are not enticed by this offer or don't want their game to be on Epic Games launcher because of other reasons will be able to request a full refund. While fair, this option is not ideal either as fans pledged their money for a game they thought they will enjoy but the rug is now being pulled from under their feet.

Snapshot's decision to accept Epic Games' offer regarding the timed exclusivity is dubious at best, since $445.000 of its initial funding was from the pledges. On top of that, Phoenix Point's Fig FAQ page clearly stated the game would come to both Steam and GOG for years now.

Epic Games' moves are understandable from the business side of things but they are certainly not earning themselves any goodwill in the process of trying to get more users on their platform. On the other hand, Snapshot Games' immediate future is not compromised as Epic Games offer revenue guarantees to developers as one of the incentives to go exclusive.
