It seems like 2018 going to be a good year for racing games, with Codemasters now announcing Onrush, the company's arcade racer that, if the trailer is anything to go by, looks great and promises some serious fun.
Codemasters say Onrush is a game where fun is as important as competing. They also say Onrush is a contact sport, so don't be expecting your regular, serious racing - we're talking arcade fun and potentially plenty of it.
Having said that, the game brings eight classes of vehicles, where each comes with its own set of advantages and drawbacks, much like in real life. With eight classes of vehicles, however, we'd rather not speculate and instead wait on Codemasters to throw us a bone. Or exhaust pipe, whatever.
There's also something the studio call a Rush meter, which we suppose is your regular fill-the-meter mechanism commonly found in modern racing titles. Nothing particularly mysterious here, other than how Codemasters decide to implement it.
The trailer is truly gorgeous although, to be fair, trailers always are. However, Codemasters said that the trailer has been pieced together from in-game footage, which - if true, means that this is one racing title you might not want miss.
As far as the developer's reputation goes, I will politely assume younger guys and girls who may not be familiar with Codemasters, but for us old sods - Codemasters is a household name, developing games as far back as the eighties. Micro Machines anyone? No, not the new one, although it's great, I mean the old one. Oh well, I guess I'm just old.
These are probably not the same people as over 30 years ago, but there is a certain reputation in play we hope they are careful to maintain.
As far as racing games go, Codemasters helped build this genre into what it is today, with its lineup including classics such as TOCA Touring Car Championship, Colin McRae Rally 2, Colin McRae Dirt and the list goes on and on.
Onrush is coming in Summer 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and will be published by Deep Silver, the company bought by Koch Media, which in turn was . Well, nice start Deep Silver. This may also explain why the trailer is cut together from in-game footage.
