Sony's PlayStation 5 user interface is undergoing changes, including a personalized interface card that allows users to customize their background image, add elements like battery status, trophy statistics, and friend activity.

It's another one of those one-step-forward, two-steps-back moments for Sony upon gazing at the latest changes to the PlayStation 5 user interface. While some changes go well with players, others simply leave them less than thrilled.

Recently, it was revealed that the PS5 will have a personalized interface card. This will grant the user the ability to customize their background image, add several different elements like how much battery is left within connected devices, trophy statistics, and even friend activity.

While this customization is great and all, there's another change Sony's been relatively quiet about, and it's one players aren't too happy with. Soon, the PlayStation 5 UI will no longer feature background images for game-specific cards and instead promote videos and images for events, additional content, and games themselves on those cards.

More than that, these ads won't even be limited to the game represented by said card but may be used to promote other titles within the same series or similar content-such as LEGO Horizon Adventures on a Horizon Zero Dawn card or Spider-Man films on Spider-Man game cards.

Because of this setting, for the time being, there has been no apparent way to turn off these ads on the main screen. The only workaround from this would be to completely cut the console from the internet.

This new interface, however, is still within its testing stages; hence, it just wouldn't hurt for Sony to backtrack on this decision in the face of enough complaint from players.

This Sony experiment speaks to how not every adjustment made to interfaces is created equal, especially when the introduction of advertisements occurs in spaces where they had not existed before. It remains to be seen whether these changes stick or if player feedback will offer adjustments.
