EVO announced the roster for the most high profile tournament of the year when it comes to fighting games and to many fans' surprise, it didn't include Mortal Kombat 11, despite the title being one of the most popular in the genre right now.
EVO 2020 lineup has been revealed with nine games in total. The full list is as follows:
- Under Night In-Birth
- Super Smash Bros Ultimate
- Dragon Ball FighterZ
- Tekken 7
- Marvel vs. Capcom 2
- Street Fighter V: Champion Edition
- Soul Calibur V
- Granblue Fantasy Versus
- Samurai Shodown
As you can see, Mortal Kombat 11 is not on the list even though the game is one of the most popular around as far as the fighting genre goes. Even the roster announcement from EVO was flooded with questions about the exclusion of a popular game but there are currently no answers. NetherRealm Studios have been keeping quiet as well.
Meanwhile, Samurai Shodown is making a debut as the game has been released less than a year ago. A new season of content will come around during February 2020 as the release date for Nintendo Switch version approaches at the end of the month.
As for Marvel vs Capcom 2, it will appear in an EVO lineup for the first time in 10 years. The title will feature the Tournament of Champions which will be an eight-player invitational, consisting of the best players of all time. One of the reasons why the game was included in the prestigious tournament might be because it's celebrating 20th anniversary in 2020.
EVO 2020 will kick off on 31 July and wrap up on 2 August 2020. The venue will be Mandalay Bay resort and casino in Last Vegas, Nevada.
