Mortal Kombat 11 has been getting mostly favourable reception but one problem that kept popping up is the sort of progression system, set to be changed. It forced players into either ungodly grind hours or into paying for microtransactions.
Mortal Kombat 11 players have been complaining about the game taking a horrible amount of grind in order to get the cosmetic rewards, which is normally seen as goading said players into spending money on microtransactions.
For comparison, imagine fighting Psycho Mantis in Metal Gear Solid but in order to switch the controller port, you had to pay a fee. Otherwise, you would be forced to beat the boss even though he kept reading your input extremely fast, making it near impossible to win the fight.
Now, while some characters being locked behind a pay-wall became an industry standard without players lashing out about it, NetherRealm have been known for pushing even that button a bit too hard. Injustice 2 had Darkseid as an exclusive pre-order fighter and the same practice was used once again with Mortal Kombat 11 and Shao Kahn.
It appears that the combination of these monetisation strategies reached the boiling point with gamers and many of them voiced displeasure at how Mortal Kombat 11 was being handled.
NetherRealm Studios reacted to the feedback during a Kombat Kast episode, where the developers the unlock rate would be increased in the future, potentially averting a microtransaction-induced crisis.
The fix will be deployed without a patch apparently as NetherRealm stated some minor alterations to the game's numbers do not require a full patch download. This is in part good news since the fix could go live at any moment but it is also a bit scary to know devs could manipulate unlock rates at whim, with no warning attached.
NetherRealm didn't specify when the change will happen though, other than saying they will deploy it "ASAP".
