Bungie released a new cinematic trailer for Marathon showcasing the Rook Runner Shell, a cautious scavenger class that specializes in looting after battles and avoiding direct firefights.

Bungie has increased the tempo of its marketing drum just ahead of Marathon‘s launch. A new cinematic trailer has arrived showcasing another of the game’s playable Runner Shells. Server Slam tests kick off tomorrow and fans are getting hyped about Marathon‘s individual playstyles and tactical sandbox.

The newest cinematic showcases the Rook, which Bungie describes as a scavenger Runner Shell that specializes in playing cautiously and lurking. They won’t hesitate to pick fights, but instead they’re built around looting carefully after a battle has played out.

As release day rapidly approaches, players are getting a stronger grasp on how each Runner Shell can tactically play through a match differently. Marathon really encourages players to think tactically without punishing them for doing so.

Players control the Rook as they cautiously scout through a building wrecked by gunfire. In the waterlogged courtyard below they find a squad that clearly took more than they could handle.

Hostile bots appear, and the Rook drops down to loot whatever equipment wasn’t soaked by the previous firefight. There’s one survivor – a burly Destroyer bot – and the Rook must take him out. But the sudden gunfire attracts additional enemies. And since the Rook isn’t interested in a firefight, they book it.

The Rook’s identity is clear cut from this cinematic. They don’t hesitate to loot from fallen enemies, but will avoid:

  • Lingering during firefights
  • Risking secured equipment
  • Trading long fires just to soak up damage

Team Rook will be great for players who want to stick to the shadows rather than challenging other squads head-on. Marathon promises aggressive player-versus-player gameplay, but having options to play carefully is always welcome.

Marathon was developed by Bungie and will release on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on 5 March. Server Slam Public Tests will run from 26 February to 2 March. During this time players can familiarize themselves with Marathon through short and long extraction modes before tackled exfil missions.
