When it comes to trading card games, Magic: The Gathering is the one that started it all and its new digital version, Magic: The Gathering Arena is raring for an open beta next week, 27 September 2018, when everyone can get a proper taste.

Just a quick prelude for players who may not be familiar with Magic: The Gathering. We're talking about the first card trading game that launched in 1993 and to this days maintains an impressive and fervent following, which is a huge deal for a game that requires your physical presence.

As far as gameplay goes, you could mash up Hearthstone, Gwent, Yu-Gi-Oh! and The Elder Scrolls: Legends into one, and you'd get a nice tutorial for basics of Magic: The Gathering - that's how deep the game goes. Naturally, simplicity of games like Hearthstone played a big role in their mass appeal but if you're looking for a hard-core strategy-based card game - you've just found the mother of 'em all.

Players who've taken part in Magic: The Gathering Arena's closed beta should know that purchases will be turned off on 21 September, followed by account wipe on 24 September. All earlier purchases will be refunded as gems once the open beta starts and the same goes for purchased gems, welcome bundles, redeemed code rewards, etc.

Magic: The Gathering Arena has a special treat for anyone who jumps into open beta as you'll be able to play around with Guilds of Ravnica two days before the tabletop edition hits the stores. Additionally, should you buy any physical Guilds of Ravnica packs, you're likely to find redeemable codes for Magic: The Gathering Arena too.

With plenty of improvements done in the closed beta, Wizards of the Coast promise that Magic: The Gathering Arena's open beta will bring more PvP modes, various experimental events, more meaningful ranking and progression, more cosmetics, duplicate handling and a bunch more.

Magic: The Gathering Arena's servers will be down from the server wipe on 24 September until the open beta officially kicks off, but you can already preload the game . Be warned - this is one addiction you're not likely to shake. I should know.
