A new developer diary has given us another look at LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, providing new details about its gameplay systems, playable characters, and open-world rendition of Gotham City.
The latest in LEGO‘s storied partnership with DC will deliver another LEGO-branded superhero adventure this fall. The cinematic developer diary goes over a handful of gameplay details, while also shedding additional light on the story campaign and experience leveling systems.
Playable Characters and Unique Abilities
Players will control multiple famous heroes and allies from Batman's universe. Every character has their own unique abilities, gadgets and progression trees that unlock as players progress through the campaign.
Characters include:
- Batman
- Robin
- Nightwing
- Catwoman
- Batgirl
- Jim Gordon
- Talia al Ghul
Characters also come equipped with their own unique gear. Robin comes equipped with a line launcher. Catwoman wields her trusty whip. Jim Gordon utilizes a foam sprayer.
Story Focuses on Batman’s Early Years
The campaign’s premise takes place during Batman’s past, training under the League of Shadows. Bruce Wayne establishes the beginning of Batman within this story.
As players progress through the campaign they will recruit allies to aid against the criminal organizations taking over Gotham.
Some of the villains players will encounter:
- Joker
- Penguin
- Poison Ivy
- Ra’s al Ghul
- Bane
These villains will be featured during the campaign mode as the story unfolds.
Open-World Gotham City
Players will have access to a huge open-world Gotham City they can explore. There will be activities to do and discover all around the city. Travel from the rooftops to the alleys and streets while on missions and puzzle-solving.
Around the open world players can:
- Use the Bat grapple launcher to swing between buildings
- Deploy the Batglider to fly around
- Drive an assortment of Batmobiles and Batcycles
Players can customize their Batcave to store and show off vehicles, trophies, and collectibles.
Combat and Difficulty Options
LEGO Batman introduces a new combat system that feels more impactful. Chain attacks, counter enemies, and trigger spectacular takedowns.
Players can tackle the campaign alone or with a friend with local two-player coop. Players can also enjoy more difficult challenges with new difficulty levels:
- Caped Crusader difficulty
- Dark Knight difficulty
Both options will provide a challenge that is scaled up from normal LEGO game difficulty levels.
Release Date and Platforms
LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight releases on May 29 for:
- Xbox Series X/S
- PlayStation 5
- PC
The game is also coming to Nintendo Switch 2 later in 2026.
