Since its release in 2009 League of Legends has continued using mouse-based controls for player movement. Players have used right-clicks on the map to move their champions throughout the game's entire twelve-year history.
Riot Games plans to revolutionize player movement in the game with the introduction of a WASD control option that delivers enhanced control for players in the Rift.
Riot Games decided to add a WASD movement option following the successful reception of the twin-stick shooter style WASD control scheme in their experimental game mode Swarm. The community praised the fluid and familiar WASD key usage and Riot seems to have embraced this feedback.
WASD Movement Coming to Summoner’s Rift
SkinSpotlights, a League of Legends content creator, announced the introduction of WASD movement functionality to Summoner’s Rift, and now, Riot Games confirmed the news. The revealed information indicates that the upcoming input system will supplement rather than replace the current mouse control method.
Players will have the ability to switch between traditional mouse controls and keyboard-based navigation through a toggleable feature. While the game now includes WASD navigation the developers have also introduced directional spell-casting which enables champions to cast abilities toward their facing direction.
The gameplay of champions that utilize skill shots or dash abilities may experience considerable changes through this new system.
Flash Settings and Release Date
It is also worth noting that the WASD input method will stay with the classic mouse movement. Players will be able to pick whichever they would prefer to use.
The update will also add the ability to cast spells in the direction of the character’s facing. New settings for the summoner spell “Flash” will also be included.
As for a release date, Riot has officially announced that it is set to release on Patch 25.24 on December 3, 2025.
