League of Legends is on the cusp of a major overhaul of its Ranked system as part of a 2026 season refresh. A number of classic Ranked pain points are being targeted, including the autofill and dodging systems, queue times, and rank distribution. The end result should be a Ranked experience that feels more consistent, less frustrating, and better tuned to the competitive skill level of modern players.
The upcoming update has been designed with a focus on community feedback regarding old issues that have plagued the game for years. At the same time, however, it will also feature new systems intended to reduce the frequency of certain types of unexpected behavior, including lobbies being short, mismatched roles, and inexplicable rank disparities.
With matchmaking logic, LP protection, and Champ Select flow all receiving significant attention, the 2026 season is set to be one of Riot’s broadest sweeping changes to the competitive climb in recent years.
Autofill Parity for Fairer Role Matchups
Autofill is here to stay due to large role popularity disparities, but it’s impact on the match’s fairness is being lessened. In 2026, it will attempt to pair autofilled players directly against an autofilled player of the same role when possible.
If not, it will try to equalize the overall number of autofills on both teams. In the edge cases where perfect parity can’t be reached, the team with more autofilled players will be given slightly higher MMR teammates as compensation.
The idea behind this change is to stop particularly egregious unfair matchups, most commonly autofilled junglers vs jungle mains. In short: if autofill is going to happen, at least make it feel manageable and not a guaranteed loss.
Aegis of Valor: LP Protection and Rewards
Autofilled games feel empty to play and rarely make players feel like their time is well spent. To address this, Riot is testing a new system called Aegis of Valor which grants players either double LP gain or full LP protection in autofilled matches when they earn a mastery grade of C or better. Before entering a game, players will be shown if Aegis of Valor is active for that match.
This new system should help mitigate the annoyance of playing in the wrong role while also incentivizing players to still play their best and experiment with new roles with less fear of unfair LP loss.
New Dodging Rules for a More Stable Champ Select
Dodging is one of the most annoying disruptions in Ranked, as it often causes players to wait longer for a game and experience repeated lobbies. In 2026, dodging will no longer reset your autofill status.
If you choose to dodge out of a game, your autofill status will carry over into the next one.The goal is to punish repeat dodging behavior when players are trying to get out of an autofill lobby. For players at Master tier and above, dodging will count as a full loss in addition to the standard cooldown applied to dodging.
Faster Queue Times and Streamlined Champ Select
Champ Select will be faster and more efficient to get through with changes to how people interact with each other when picking and banning. Players will no longer be able to ban their allies’ hovered champion.
This option was commonly abused to intentionally trigger early tilt in the lobby and provoke unnecessary dodges. In tests, removing this option did not result in any notable differences to win rates or behaviors in Champ Select.
Finally, Riot is reducing the animations and waits in Champ Select by about 30 seconds worldwide after positive testing in North America and Oceania.
Rank Distribution Recalibration and MMR Visibility
In the past few years, many modern Bronze players are better than the Bronze players of previous years. To address this, the lower tiers will be recalibrated to better reflect the average skill at those tiers.
This is not a rank inflation pass, this is a realignment of the expectations of new players and returning players whose rank no longer reflects their skill.Riot is also introducing a new Climb Indicator that will show players when their visible rank is not keeping up with their MMR.
Flex and Solo/Duo MMR Adjustments
The imbalances in Flex MMR, where players with extremely different Solo ranks could play in the same match, have caused a number of issues.
To better align these different ranks, Riot is bringing Flex MMR closer to Solo/Duo MMR by shifting them together until they better overlap with each other. Flex matches will not raise your Solo MMR, but it will more accurately reflect your current skill level.
Duo Queue Will Return to All Ranks
Riot is re-enabling duo queue in Solo/Duo at all ranks, including Challenger, in most regions. Thanks to recent changes to the boosting detection systems and a more accurate confidence in matchmaking, Riot is more confident that the system can more fairly handle high level duos.
