In response to a longstanding community request, Riot Games is internally testing in-game skin previews in League of Legends. The pre-orders for new skins come with a unique YouTube video embed in the client showing the skin in motion before the purchase is made.
These are not yet the highly-rendered 3D preview models seen in the mobile League of Legends: Wild Rift app, but they are a huge step forward.
Currently only a small portion of the client userbase has access to the feature, with Riot noting that the experiment may be taken down if it affects skin purchases. “If it shows that these videos drive down skin sales then it’s an easy choice to revert this,” the company said in a dev post. “But if sales remain the same or don’t seem to be impacted by these videos, we can slowly roll them out to more and more people.”
The videos for in-game testing are currently pulled from the same content Riot uploads to X and YouTube during Pre-Release Event testing cycles, so they are not fully interactive or rendered in the client natively yet.
Nonetheless, this is the first time that PC players of League of Legends will be able to see the motion and look of a skin in action before purchase, rather than having to go off the splash art images which can be very far from what they render in-game.
Riot also teases additional improvements to the client are on the way in the future, such as increased stability and a potential wishlist for cosmetic tracking.
As for when - or if - the new skin preview system will be rolled out more broadly, Riot has not given a timeline. For now, watch the client and follow for more updates.
