As far as the culture of League of Legends is concerned, ranked is the most important thing in the game. And Riot Games have leaned into this, by promoting ranks and investing in professional games.
Recently, though, in patch 12.15 Riot Games have changed the way Duo Queues work, as they are now based on MMR instead of actual rank. They are moving a step further though.
In patch 12.17, a small addendum states: "Summoner’s Rift Ranked queue matchmaking will now focus more on player’s MMR and less on their visible rank (e.g. Silver or Gold)".
This is a change that may mean a lot of different things. The biggest of all though, is that it may even remove the need for a "smurf queue", as MMR will be the main driving force in matchmaking.
However, will that also mean that players with a high MMR will be able to get a lot more LP for their games, to climb quickly to their desired elo? Well, it should, though we don't think Riot have thought that far.
Of course, that is already a thing in League of Legends, but perhaps it would perhaps be wise to increase the LP gain for such players, as they are mostly those returning to the game after a break, and there is a marked difference in their skill and that of genuinely new players.
