After years of player feedback Riot Games has decided to tackle the longstanding League of Legends issue of autofill matchmaking. The new Patch 25.08 which launches on April 16, 2025 introduces an in-game feature allowing players to swap roles during Champion Select.
Players can now easily request a role change with a teammate by clicking a "Role Swap" button instead of relying on written requests. Players can exchange roles immediately upon acceptance without needing to persuade or type anything. The feature benefits chat-restricted players and those who speak different languages by making Champion Select more accessible to everyone.
The new system makes role swapping more efficient than informal chat methods by better facilitating communication and coordination while keeping pre-game setup simple.
Additional Champion Select Modifications in Patch 25.08
Patch 25.08 is bringing more quality-of-life improvements:
Smite Auto-Assigned to Junglers: Teams now have a maximum of one Smite ability to prevent double Smite strategies and reduce disruptive picks.
Supports Auto-Receive Support Items: Support players no longer need to worry about buying Doran's Blade or mistakenly purchasing items because they will now automatically receive their starter support item upon entering the game.
When is Role Swapping Coming?
Patch 25.08 will release all these changes together with the new Role Swap button on April 16, 2025.
