Returnal made a splash as everyone was buzzing about the game at the very end of April 2021 and it translated into the game becoming popular enough to reach near the top of the ladder for the month, despite having just one day to compete.
Sony released their monthly list of the most downloaded games and April was a doozy for the gamers. Outriders released at the beginning of the month, It Takes Two just a few days earlier and it was all crowned by the huge release of Returnal on April 30, 2021.
In the US, Returnal became the third most downloaded game for the month even though it released on the last day before May. That is quite an accomplishment even if Outriders took the spot ahead since the game had a whole month to entice players to download it enough to take the #2 spot on the list.
MLB The Show 2021 took the pole position, which is something the US player base shared with Europe - they both had sports games at the top. Similarly, Outriders was the second most downloaded game on the old continent but it was It Takes Two that was third in the EU.
Returnal placed fourth in Europe, which is still quite an accomplishment since It Takes Two also had almost the entire month of April for the players to download it, compared to roughly 24 hours for Returnal.
Another interesting take from the monthly blog post is that Marvel's Avengers is somehow hanging around the top 10 of the most downloaded game as it placed 11th in US and 9th in Europe.
