If you’ve been waiting for the perfect moment to jump into the Wizarding World, consider this your owl-delivered invitation. Hogwarts Legacy is currently free to download and keep on PC, thanks to the Epic Games Store’s annual holiday giveaway. The promotion only lasts a short while - until December 18 - so make sure you nab it before it vanishes like Harry and Ron under the invisibility cloak. To download the game, simply start your Epic Games Store app, search for Hogwarts Legacy (or scroll down on the Store page until you see the Free Games section, then click on Hogwarts Legacy) and click the Get button.
Released in 2023, Hogwarts Legacy remains one of the standout open-world RPGs of the last few years. Set in the 1800s, well before Harry, Hermione and Ron started breaking school rules, it allows you to create your own witch or wizard, attend classes, hurl spells around like confetti, explore the castle grounds, and uncover ancient magical mysteries. It received strong reviews at launch, currently holding a Metacritic score in the mid-80s, with players praising its world-building, atmosphere, and exploration.
And honestly, it’s hard to imagine a better winter game. Hogsmeade alone, with its cosy glow, Christmas decorations and snow-dusted streets, feels tailor-made for December evenings. Wandering through the castle’s stunning interiors or gliding over the Highlands on a broom gives the whole experience a warm, fireside charm, even if there’s always the risk of a random troll ruining your stroll.
While this free offer is PC-exclusive, Hogwarts Legacy is also available on PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch for those preferring a more sofa-friendly setup.
Hogwarts Legacy was a massive success for Warner Bros. so the publisher are already working on a full sequel, with Avalanche Software expected to expand the world and story in significant ways. No release date yet, but the broomsticks are clearly in motion.
