Hogwarts Legacy sold more copies than Elden Ring, according to the official numbers

Warner Bros. Games has announced that Hogwarts Legacy has sold over 40 million units worldwide, making it the biggest game release in the publisher's history and placing it among the best-selling games of all time.

Warner Bros. Games have today announced that their Harry Potter RPG Hogwarts Legacy has crossed 40 million units sold worldwide across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. The milestone establishes the open-world RPG as the biggest game release in Warner Bros. Games history and positions it among the industry's most commercially successful titles.

The 40 million figure places Hogwarts Legacy in rare company, matching the lifetime sales of franchises like Sonic the Hedgehog and Payday 2. More impressively, it has outsold major blockbusters including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at 35.04 million, Cyberpunk 2077 at 35 million, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at 36.93 million units.

The sales achievement pretty much guarantees a sequel, with Warner Bros. previously confirming that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is in development. The massive commercial performance also shows just how popular the Harry Potter universe is beyond the original books and films and to be honest, I'm surprised we didn't get at least a DLC until now.

Hogwarts Legacy was developed by Avalanche Software and published under the Portkey Games label. It launched almost three years ago in February 2023 to immediate commercial success despite some pre-release controversy. The game offers an original story set in the 1800s wizarding world, casting players as a fifth-year student at Hogwarts with the ability to explore familiar locations, discover magical beasts, craft potions, and master spell casting.
