Gears 5 developers, The Coalition confirmed in their latest blog post that the game won't contain loot boxes and won't come with a season pass. Instead, the devs will release free DLC content that will include maps, supply drops and more.

Gears 5 is only a few months away now, and the developers The Coalition have shared a lot of new details about the game's content and how exactly players will earn this content.

Right at the beginning, the devs wanted to make it clear that the season pass has been completely removed from the game and the same goes for Gear Packs, which is a fancy name for loot boxes, or surprise mechanics how some publishers love to call them.

The devs say that they listened to the Gears community and their goal was to create "a player-first experience" when it comes to earning in-game content. For this reason, Gears 5 will add free DLC maps for matchmaking and Private Play. Furthermore, there is the all-new Tour of Duty system which includes Daily Challenges and seasonal Medals to rank up and earn customisation content, skins etc.

You won't be able to buy Tour of Duty content with real-world money and you'll know exactly what you're getting and what you need to do to earn the specific item. Tour of Duty will run in a seasonal format, bringing new content and challenges each season.

Gears 5 will also reward players with Supply Drops for simply playing the game. Every minute you play across every multiplayer mode will contribute towards a random item drop from a special pool of content named Supply.

While there is a ton of free stuff in Gears 5, the game will also allow you to spend real-world money on specific content. All content that you find in the store is a direct purchase, meaning what you see is what you get, no surprise mechanics or RNG.

These items will be cosmetics only and won't bring any type of advantage over those who don't spend additional money in the store. To buy items, you'll spend currency named Iron which can be purchased with real-world money but also earned from the Tour of Duty mode.
