Fortnite‘s PvE mode is becoming free-to-play next month according to Epic Games. Fortnite: Save the World will release as free-to-play starting April 16, 2026.
This will allow players to access the PvE mode of Fortnite for free starting next month. Information was provided in a new developer update from the Epic Games Store. They’ve detailed multiple Fortnite changes this week, including the announcement that Save the World is becoming free-to-play.
Save the World Becomes Free-to-Play
Players will no longer have to buy a founder pack or specific edition of Fortnite to play Save the World starting April 16. Save the World is a cooperative PvE mode where players battle waves of enemies.
Players traverse a massive battleground while doing missions, gathering loot, and unlocking character progress. Teams of players fight off tougher zombie-like creatures the further they reach into each map’s zones. Yoo can complete missions either with friends or with matchmaking to squad up and play through Fortnite Save the World.
Community Milestones and Rewards
Players can register for the community registration campaign prior to the game releasing as free-to-play. There are currently three milestone rewards that the community can unlock:
- 300k registrations – First milestone unlocked
- 700k registrations – Second milestone unlocked
- 1m registrations – Final community milestone featuring the Snowstrike Hero
The Snowstrike Hero is a Save the World exclusive Hero players can unlock when the community’s registration reaches 1 million.

Starting April 16, Save the World will be available for free on the following platforms:
- PlayStation 5
- PlayStation 4
- Xbox Series X/S
- Xbox One
- Xbox Cloud Gaming
- Nintendo Switch 2
- PC
- NVIDIA GeForce NOW
- Amazon Luna
Support for Switch 2 also extends the mode’s reach even farther, introducing the cooperative experience to another huge platform. Launching free-to-play on April 16 could signal a big surge of players discovering Fortnite’s PvE mode for the first time.
