Focus Home Interactive and Vostok Games have announced that Fear the Wolves is coming to Steam Early Access on 28 August 2018. This comes 10 days after the originally planned release date, following a delay due to performance issues.
Want more battle royale? No? Doesn't matter, here is some more, cheeki breeki style. Battle royale Chernobyl has received a new gameplay trailer to celebrate the release date announcement, which will likely not get postponed again.
This announcement didn't exactly garner many sympathies as closed beta testers kept saying the game is not ready for Early Access yet.
Having played it in the closed beta, I'm in a bit of conundrum. The game is clearly in need of more testing and even though many performance issues have been fixed, there is still no shortage of them in Fear the Wolves. Then again, the game is not heading for a full release, but rather Early Access which serves the purpose fo gathering feedback from players before an actual release. There was no official statement from Focus Home Interactive regarding the game's price but current rumours speculate a $19,99 / €19,99 / £17,99 price tag.
Fear the Wolves is attempting to differentiate itself from other battle royale games through several aspects. There is no circle of death of any sort in the game, but it herds players closers towards each other with radiation and the winning condition isn't always to be the last person standing. The game features a unique helicopter extraction mechanic, where a player needs to climb a rope onto it and escape. It can be risky though if they are not the last survivor, as other players can shoot them down while still on the rope.
Developers have stated they have plans for additional maps and other content in the future, with a roadmap coming after the game gets released in Steam Early Access. Vostok Games will be present at Gamescom 2018, but there is no confirmation on whether Fear the Wolves will be playable during the event yet.
