Vostok Games' battle royale, Fear the Wolves is getting an official release on 06 February 2019. The developers, along with the publisher, Focus Home Interactive, announced the first week will be free and will feature a 50% off sale.
Fear the Wolves' launch week will have an odd business model, as it is reminiscent of free weekends known from high profile games such as Overwatch and Rainbow Six Siege. Players will be able to enjoy this battle royale for free until 12 February 2019. While the free week sounds like a good promotional idea, the timing is terrible, as it coincides with The Division 2 beta.
Anyway, just like the free weekend events, the free week for Fear the Wolves will feature a 50 per cent off sale. Normally, the game costs $19,99 / €19,99 / £16,99, but it will be available for $9,99 / €9,99 / £8,49 for the duration of the launch week.
For those unacquainted, Fear the Wolves is a battle royale inspired by S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series and will, therefore, feature anomalies and mutated creatures. There will be two new artifacts at launch, as well as a new mutated wolf - the Wolf Matriarch.
Killing the matriarch will cause her to drop the heart, which is an artifact that will allow players to summon mutated wolves on two occasions, to help them in future firefights against other players. The other anomaly is a spore that gives players a temporary wallhack.
Fear the Wolves has proven that it has a decently fresh concept and the wolves along with environmental hazards are a nice twist to the battle royale genre, but the game never managed to reach even 1.000 concurrent players during Early Access.

The free week might help propel those numbers for a while but the lack of proper marketing is evident. It remains to be seen whether the game will manage to carve its own slice of battle royale market, but games in the genre have been on a downward spiral for a while now, with Fortnite and PUBG virtually holding the entire market.
