Vela Games, an Irish game studio established by former developers from Riot Games in 2018, recently introduced their debut game during a digital prebrief event attended by Digital Trends. The game, called Evercore Heroes, takes the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) concept, popularized by League of Legends, and transforms it into a competitive player versus environment (PvE) dungeon-crawling experience.
While Evercore Heroes shares similarities in gameplay and an isometric view with titles like League of Legends, the distinguishing factor is that players do not engage in direct combat with each other. Instead, four teams of four players compete cooperatively in a dungeon-crawling adventure.
As they progress, players level up their characters, charge the Evercore (a central objective), and ultimately triumph by defeating a formidable boss. Recognizing that MOBAs, both in terms of gameplay and community, can be daunting for newcomers, co-founder Travis George hopes that the cooperative elements of Evercore Heroes, along with other endeavors by Vela Games, will create a welcoming and approachable gaming experience that players will return to.
George explains, "We all understand that gaming communities are not always known for being the friendliest places, and we can't change human behavior on the internet. However, we can be deliberate in our gameplay, community-building efforts, and even our technological choices to hopefully shape a more positive online experience for players. Our aim is to keep them coming back."
Evercore Heroes currently features eight playable heroes: Shade, an assassin; Fyn, a shield-wielding character; Zari, an archer; Beko, a creature with a design chosen by the community; Blink, a melee-focused boxer; Cynder, a fire mage; Remy, a tech medic; and Lotus, a short-range healer.
Each hero possesses unique abilities, and their designs bear the influence of Riot Games, giving them a reminiscent feel of League of Legends champions or Valorant agents. Fans of Riot Games should definitely keep an eye on Evercore Heroes.
