Epic Games' 12 Days of Free Games continues today with another delicious indie gem - FTL: Advanced Edition, a glorious reminder that creating timeless games is about creativity and effort, rather than graphics and budget.
Which is not to say that any of these are mutually exclusive, at least not in theory. Unfortunately, many bigger budget productions reach the size where tending to the technical side of things ends up outweighing that which kept up glued to TVs and calculator-grade consoles.
And this is exactly what Subset Games achieved with FTL: Advanced Edition, sending the fun-meter through the roof. Seriously - if you're looking at screenshots and thinking the graphics is not your cup of tea, install it anyway. You'll thank us once you've snapped back into reality a few hours later.
FTL: Advanced Edition is a real-time rougelike where your mission is to navigate different galaxy sectors while trying to keep your ship in one piece. You control your crewmembers and respond to different events, with plenty of variety to keep the game fresh.
The Advanced Edition that's free at the moment is an expansion to the original FTL: Faster Than Light. While the core experience remained the same, the expansion added additional ships, new events and enemies, as well as some facilities that add even more replayability.
If you won't take our word for it, then feel free to count the number of awards the game received in just about every department, not to mention the Kickstarter campaign whose final sum made the initially requested sum look silly.
It seems that the residents of Rumourville have found a reliable snitch at Epic Games, and they correctly caled the earlier two games. Apparently, tomorrow's freebie is Hyper Light Drifter, so we'll see whether they make it three for three.
