Video game developers will often say that every video game that sees the light of day is a miracle. That's how challenging and unpredictable the entire development process can be.
Techland, the developer of the excellent zombie horror action adventure RPG series Dying Light, have spent fourteen years developing Dying Light 1 and Dying Light 2, and probably knows firsthand how tough game development is.
That's why they are trying to walk away from such long development cycles, opting for more focused games that would need three to four years of development only.
Techland want to release games more often
In a recent interview with Wccftech, Techland said their upcoming game Dying Light: The Beast will be the first step towards achieving that.
"Both Dying Light 1 and 2 took seven years to make. We think that with a slightly different approach, with a bigger focus, we can release games more often," Techland Dying Light Franchise Director Tymon Smektala said. "We are probably looking at a three or four-year cycle, and I think that Dying Light: The Beast is the first step in that direction."
We Need More "Smaller" Games
I have to say that some of my favourite games are shorter 10-15 hour experiences, and if Dying Light: The Beast falls into that bucket, then I'll be even more excited to try it out.
We're getting way too many big, bloated open-world games these days, so it's always nice when a developer decides to give us something that doesn't require a commitment worth 100+ hours.
