Techland has unveiled the first devblog for Dying Light: The Beast, spotlighting Kyle Crane’s torture, emotional struggles, and the brutal tone of the upcoming game.

Fans of the Dying Light series have long called for the return of the game’s hero Kyle Crane, and just weeks ahead of Dying Light: The Beast’s launch, Techland is giving them what they want. A new developer blog series has just launched, with a new article and accompanying short featurette planned over the course of the next three weeks, each one previewing a different aspect of the gameplay, story, and evolution of Kyle Crane.

The first devblog, titled Torture and Suffering, plunges players right into the emotional depth of the story. Crane’s adventure this time around is not a vacation. Throughout his time in the dark alleyways and rooftops of Harran, Kyle must suffer both mentally and physically at the hands of one of the game’s main antagonists.

Accompanying the devblog is a featurette from Techland, which captures Kyle Crane’s torture in all its glorious detail.Players will be treated to a few more videos and behind-the-scenes looks at game systems in the coming weeks as the studio digs into various story points, new mechanics, and game systems.

Kyle Crane’s Return After a Decade

Kyle Crane was a fan favorite of the first Dying Light, and after a decade, bringing back that character presented Techland with a unique set of challenges. The developer blog goes into detail on both the creative and technical difficulties the studio had to address to make Crane’s return a success.

Aside from a new visual redesign and performance capture work, the development team also had to recontextualize his character. Kyle Crane has been gone for a decade, changed by his experiences and broken by the torture he experiences.

The result is a character that feels both like the Crane players remember, and a new version of the character, with a gameplay loop that truly reflects his current mental and emotional state.

The Brutal Tone of The Beast

If the title of the first devblog didn’t make it clear already, it seems Dying Light: The Beast is being designed as a grittier and more brutal direction for the series. The Baron’s acts of torture and violence define the first hour or so of Crane’s experience, with the player set up to feel his weight and despair.

Combat is designed to feel more brutal, and more weighted with emotional stakes than ever before. This intent will only be further expressed in combat through Crane’s changes to his movement and combat abilities.

The developers also tease that future devblogs will dive into more of the game’s systems and new areas of gameplay, art direction, and level design. With Dying Light: The Beast releasing in just a few short weeks, fans can look forward to a new installment in the series for the first time in six years.
