Ever since Rockstar released Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer, fans of the series have been discussing if the gorgeous footage we've seen is from the actual game or just a CGI.
Rockstar's previous trailers were always in-game and GTA 6 also looked like it was captured that way but some argued that the game looks too good to be true therefore the footage we've seen may not be representative of the actual gameplay.
However, tech experts from Digital Foundry have analysed the video, concluding that the trailer was indeed captured in real time at a 1440p resolution.
Digital Foundry's Alexander Battaglia reveals that 80 per cent of the trailer can be easily done in real-time on current-gen consoles.
They highlighted one of the shots in the trailer that shows the characters' hair and the way it "breaks" the image quality, showing aliasing when the characters move like the female at 0:37 in the trailer. Here's a screenshot showing the aliasing on the hair:
Aliasing and these imperfections are rarely found in CGI footage so if there was any doubt that GTA 6 reveal trailer was done in real-time, this alone puts it to bed. Digital Foundry also mentioned several other shots that show aliasing on cables, wires and other objects found in the video.
Additionally, Digital Foundry calculated the number of pixels in the trailer, discovering that the footage was not captured in 4K. The resolution is closer to 1440p, which is somewhat expected as 4K would probably be too demanding on the console hardware. "[The trailer] doesn't have that per pixel pristine 4K look to it, it looks sub native 4," Battaglia said.
The Digital Foundry team also discussed various graphical features spotted in the video like ray-traced global illumination, ray-traced reflections and more. We recommend you check out the video below for the full detailed breakdown of GTA 6 trailer.
