Blizzard will celebrate Diablo III's 21st anniversary with a new Darkening of Tristram event. The event will bring unique transmogrification effects, achievements, portraits, pets, and more. Darkening of Tristram will start on 01 January.
Diablo turns 21 on 31 December 2017. Blizzard marked the game's 20th anniversary by holding a Darkening of Tristram event in January 2017 and they'll bring the event back in 2018.
"Whether you’re a series veteran craving nostalgia, or a newcomer hungry for your first taste of the franchise’s past" there'll be a pixelated dungeon and some old-school visual elements waiting for you at 8:00 AM GMT on 01 January, 2018. Darkening of Tristram will end on 30 January.
The event will begin "on the trail of a group of mysterious cultists causing trouble in Sanctuary." You'll hunt them down in Adventure Mode and find some clues in the process. The clues will point you in the direction of a portal that leads into Tristram’s past "and the terrifying darkness that took hold of the town so many years ago".
The portal leads to "a realm of glorious RetroVision™", where you'll find yourself thankful for today's graphics. The Cathedral you'll explore there will have no shortage of "familiar enemies and iconic items, all brought to life in the Diablo III engine". Those brave enough to go up against the Dark Lord himself can do so if they dare to venture "deep beneath the catacombs".
Can't forget about the loot: "Completing activities in the anniversary event yields unique transmogrification effects, achievements, portraits, pets, and more."
While many people are excited about the upcoming event, others fear there will be no fresh loot for them to obtain. Those who took the time to complete the event and find every last piece of loot during this year's event might end up getting quite bored during the 2018 one.
