According to CD Projekt Red quest designer Philipp Webber, side quests will have a massive role in Cyberpunk 2077. Webber said that sometimes a small quest can turn into something much bigger and even influence the main story of the game.
With Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red once again aim to deliver an immersive singleplayer experience with large main story and vast open world, similar to how they did it with their last AAA game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Being an open-world RPG, Cyberpunk 2077 will have a ton of side quests and in the latest interview conducted on the official CD Projekt Red forum, Cyberpunk 2077 quest designer Philipp Weber revealed some new, interesting details about side quests and their influence on the game's world and story.
Webber said that the goal of the developers is to create quests that won't simply task players with going from point A to point B. CD Projekt Red even have a rule against simple fetch quests and according to Webber, each side quest has to have some weight to it.
However, the most interesting part of his interview was when Webber mentioned how side quests can influence the story. Even the smallest quests in Cyberpunk 2077 can change the main story and characters that you met earlier can appear later during some main story quests.
"We, of course, like to make the game so anything you do could possibly have an impact on the main story of the game. Characters you only meet in a side quest would then suddenly show up in the main story. This way, the player never knows what to expect. Sometimes a small quest can turn into something much bigger and then change the whole main story of the game. So it’s absolutely worth playing every quest in the game and to see how they interact with each other," Webber explained.
Unfortunately, he did not mention the scope of these changes and left for players to find out just how their choices can affect the playthrough. Of course, there will also be consequences if you fail some of these quests, just like in The Witcher 3.
