Nvidia have today officially announced their GeForce RTX 4000 series cards and a couple of other features including the next iteration of their Deep Learning SuperSampling tech - DLSS 3.
To showcase the new cards and DLSS 3, Nvidia teamed up with CD Projekt Red, the developers of Cyberpunk 2077, to create a brand new ray-tracing preset for the game named Overdrive Mode.
Not a lot has been said about Overdrive Mode but we assume it's designed to push the ray-tracing quality in Cyberpunk 2077 to another level. The details are pretty scarce at the moment but it does seem like the new ray-tracing preset will be exclusive to RTX 4000 series cards, just like DLSS 3.
"CD PROJEKT RED are also upgrading Cyberpunk 2077 with a new Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode that uses the power of GeForce RTX 40 Series graphics cards to take the game’s incredible visuals to new heights," Nvidia say on their official blog.
Even without Overdrive Mode, Cyberpunk 2077 had one of the most impressive implementations of ray-tracing tech with ray-traced Global Illumination, Shadows and Reflections.
Of course, it requires beefy hardware if you're pushing for the Psycho ray-tracing preset but that's where DLSS and FSR come in handy.
It remains to be seen if Overdrive Mode arrives to other RTX cards in the near future. We doubt it will ever arrive on AMD's cards given that it's clearly a marketing feature for Nvidia to showcase the power of their hardware.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
