Cyberpunk 2077 is soon getting Overdrive ray-tracing mode and Nvidia are proudly showcasing the visual improvements that come with this full suite of ray-tracing also known as path tracing.
Nvidia have shared a new trailer and a detailed blog post, explaining everything that is coming with Cyberpunk 2077 's new Overdrive Mode. In case you're not familiar with this upcoming update, Overdrive Mode is a new, ultimate ray-tracing mode for CD Projekt Red's gorgeous action adventure RPG, which introduces full ray-tracing features also known as path tracing.
Nvidia say that Cyberpunk 2077's Overdrive Mode is just a sneak peek into the future of full ray tracing, which was not possible before since it was so GPU intensive.
Path tracing in Cyberpunk 2077 will use an unlimited number of emissive sources to accurately display ray-traced shadows, reflections and global illumination. Nvidia shared some comparison shots which reveal what kid of improvements to ray tracing we can expect from the update.
One of the examples of path tracing can be found in the comparison shot below, where Nvidia explain how Global Illumination brings the game to life. You'll notice how the sunlight bounces off the floor to indirectly light a cardboard stack for more realistic lighting and occlusion.
Another example of the benefits of path tracing is in the screenshot below, which shows how full ray tracing helps with grounding objects within their surroundings, like the car for example.
But as expected, to run Cyberpunk 2077 in the Overdrive Mode you'll need a beast of a PC . Nvidia say they only recommend GeForce RTX 4000 series graphics cards but we doubt you'll be able to get an acceptable frame rate on anything that isn't RTX 4080 or 4090 and of course, that's with DLSS 3 turned on.
Though, let's wait for the official launch to see just how demanding Cyberpunk 2077's new ray-tracing mode actually is.
You can find more 4K comparison shots in Nvidia's Cyberpunk 2077 path tracing blog post on their official website. Or, check out the trailer above. Cyberpunk 2077’s Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode will be coming on April 11, 2023 exclusively to PC.
